The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will send a new robot to Mars this summer. Five European scientists are taking part in the mission, including Vinciane Debaille, a researcher at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
NASA's Mars2020 mission opens a new path in the scientific study of Mars. The robot "rover Perseverance" will leave Earth between July 30 and August 15, 2020 and land on Mars in February 2021. The purpose of the mission is to perform chemical and mineralogical analyses to explore the different geological layers of the Jezero Crater. The robot will also drill rock cores, which a second robot will bring back to Earth in 5 to 10 years.
The ULB researcher's work will include operating the robot, documenting observations and processing the data. As a member of the scientific committee, she will also have to adjudicate on the drilling decisions.
