What is the language of teaching?

French is the language of teaching of most courses, which is why a satisfactory level of this language is required for most of the fields of study. Some programs and courses are also taught in another language (in particular in English). The students are informed upon their application for enrolment.

English-speaking students who have not had the opportunity to learn French can undertake a doctoral study program without difficulty as well as certain specialisation programs. Once in the country, they can learn basic French.

Why choose French-speaking Belgium?

1. For a unique study experience in the heart of Europe

Headquarters of the Council of the European Union and of the European Commission, of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and of more than 1000 international organisations, Brussels is, to all purposes, the de facto capital of Europe. Wallonia-Brussels is situated at the crossroads of Europe’s major communication channels. Cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, London or Berlin are within easy reach by train.

2. For a wide choice of study programs at an affordable price

In Wallonia-Brussels, students have the possibility of following short-term or long-term programs. The courses are organized in institutions classed according to the type of programs they offer: university education or non-university higher education (university colleges and art academies). A high percentage of the actual cost of higher education is covered by authorities. The tuition fees are therefore very reasonable.

3. For high-quality study programs

The fruit of a long tradition of excellence, the higher education institutions in Wallonia-Brussels have earned their place on the European higher education and research map. The degrees conferred are widely recognised by scientific and business circles at European and international level. This recognition is a guarantee of professional success. With a degree obtained from one of the higher education institutions of Wallonia Brussels, graduates stand a better chance of being recruited and of embarking on an exciting career.

4. For its open and multicultural society

Belgium is the most globalised country in the world according to the ranking drawn up by the Swiss Economic Institute (Kof). The partnerships developed by the higher education institutions of Wallonia-Brussels with foreign institutions facilitate and reinforce student mobility. 20% of students (40% at doctorate level) enrolled in higher education in Wallonia-Brussels are of foreign origin.

5.For its high quality of life

An excellent healthcare system, an efficient public transport network, an intense cultural scene and easy access to a range of sports make Wallonia-Brussels a society renowned for its quality of life. The student status makes access to these services particularly affordable. Student life is about more than just academic pursuits. Alongside the spaces set aside for study, the campuses of the institutions offer leisure, cultural, sports and catering facilities. Throughout the year, the events organised by the student associations (student clubs) reflect the dynamism and intensity of student life.

How much will my studies cost?

A high percentage of the actual cost of higher education is covered by authorities. The tuition fees are therefore very reasonable.

How can I fin accommodation?

Depending on your status, the length of your studies or your budget, you can choose between renting a room in a university residence and private accommodation (rental from private individuals).

For rooms in university residences you must contact the housing office of the university, university college or art academy where you intend to study.

To find accommodation in the private sector, two options are open to you: a personal search and search via a specialised agency. A personal search can be conducted on the web and by consulting the notice boards in stores and in certain bookshops or supermarkets. Trailing the streets on the lookout for vacant accommodation carrying “à louer/to rent” signs is also a popular way of finding accommodation. An estate agency is mainly used to find more expensive styles of accommodation. If you have enough revenues to pay a high rent, it can be practical to use an agency. See Accomodation

Will I benefit from a healthcare insurance scheme?

The Belgian medical system offers a very high level of healthcare.

To join a mutual insurance scheme during your stay in Wallonia-Brussels, you must in advance:

• be enrolled with a higher education establishment;

• request an enrolment certificate from your establishment, reserved exclusively for the mutual insurance scheme.

The contributions due must be paid each term (the amount of the quarterly statutory contribution is around 50 euros per person). Mutual insurance schemes have agencies in all academic towns. See Healthcare
