Wallonia-Brussels at the heart of Europe

From its central location in Europe, at a confluence of cultures, the Federation Wallonia-Brussels has long nurtured its international outlook.

*Federation Wallonia-Brussels is one of the three federated communities of the Federal State of Belgium. Find out more here below.

It is therefore no surprise that Brussels is, to all purposes, the de facto capital of Europe.

In fact, Brussels hosts on its territory:

  • The committees and sessions of the Parliament of the European Union
  • The European Council The European Commission
  • The Economic and Social Committee of the European Union
  • The Committee of the Regions of the European Union

Furthermore, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and more than 1,000 international organisations have their headquarters in Brussels.

The Federation Wallonia-Brussels is situated at the crossroads of Europe’s major communication channels. Cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, London or Berlin are within easy reach by train.

The Federation Wallonia-Brussels, officially known as the French-speaking Community of Belgium, is one of the three federated communities of the Federal State of Belgium.

A federal state means that the decision-making power is shared between the federal authority and the federated entities that have their own parliament and their own government.

Unofficially, when referring to the Federation Wallonia-Brussels, we often talk of French-speaking Belgium.

In Belgium, the federated entities are:

3 Communities: the Communities are federated entities based on the language spoken by the population. Given that there are three official languages in Belgium, there are also 3 Communities: the French-speaking Community, the Flemish-speaking Community and the German-speaking Community.

3 Regions: the Regions are federated entities that correspond to a geographical division of the national (federal) territory: the Walloon Region, the Flemish Region and the Brussels-Capital Region.

Please note: Higher Education and its international scope are the preserve of the Communities.
